Associate Category Manager – Speedway Application

Job Description:

The candidate will be responsible for collaboration with multiple cross-functional teams and processes including Category, Loyalty, Advertising, Consumer Insights, Supply Chain, Planogram, Price Book, Legal, Forecasting, Operations, Field Marketing, Speedway Wholesalers and Manufacture Vendor Partners. This candidate will be responsible for product development, proposing strategic pricing and promotional programs, marketing analytics and merchandising.

The candidate will be tasked to deliver results related to sales and margin growth and competitive objectives through product expertise, market knowledge, quality, innovation and strategic vision. The candidate will need to prepare and conduct supplier meetings, corporate presentations and cross-functional team meetings. The candidate will need to be prepared to negotiate with supplier partners to achieve the highest quality product for the lowest cost and seek to identify areas of leverage to achieve higher margins and penny profits than national brand equivalents. The candidate will support category teams with private label products that deliver on growth objectives by developing quality, in-demand products, promotions that engage the customer, and by maintaining the health of Speedway’s branded programs.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Attend annual private label show and industry training and other industry tradeshows and meetings such as ECRM
  • Collaborate with and oversee all activities put-forth by Private Label Category Manager
  • Communicates pertinent merchandising information to vendors, stores, distributors, marketing staff and field management
  • Completes departmental reporting as needed
  • Completes other duties, including special projects, as assigned by Management
  • Conducts performance appraisals and recommends salary considerations for subordinates, if applicable
  • Continuously evaluate private label brands and product packaging making sure they resonate with the consumer and speak to their needs
  • Create training and promotional materials in support of new product initiatives, such as corporate and field presentations, department communications and sampling
  • Develop business cases to support or challenge private label category/product opportunities
  • Drive research and analytics methodologies to promote and support private label products; onboard and engage relevant teams to meet analysis objectives and timelines
  • Ensures compliance with laws and regulations pertaining to assigned marketing category products
  • Ensures that the Company and vendor partners are in compliance with contractual terms agreed upon by the parties
  • Establishes sales and margin goals for assigned marketing category or area, and measures progress using actual results
  • Evaluate market and product landscapes to build out new launch plans
  • Identify trends and build strategy based on market conditions, challenge the status quo to create attractive private label products and programs that align with category strategies
  • Manage new product development processes across all of Speedway’s current and potential private label programs; establish financial deliverables for category growth
  • May supervise, hire, train, evaluate and motivate a Marketing team
  • Negotiate product pricing and contract terms with external suppliers in collaboration with Speedway wholesalers
  • Plans distributions of products using knowledge of the capacities and opportunities available in different store types and geographies
  • Provides expertise at meetings by attending and presenting data as needed
  • Research, develop and manage the new product development process from ideation to product launch; lead exploration of and identify potential new category and product opportunities and create plan for bringing to market
  • Resolves merchandising related problems at stores by responding to communications from field management.
  • Solicits feedback from operations personnel to improve the design and implementation of marketing activities and responds to local marketing opportunities
  • Source and vet private label manufacture partners to establish best-in-class vendor partnerships and ensure that the Company obtains optimum products, costs and promotional opportunities.
  • Utilizes all tools available including technology, merchandising, advertising and Speedy Rewards to maximize overall marketing campaign
  • Work closely with suppliers and legal teams to manage and resolve product quality issues
  • Works with category team to assure adequate product launches in pipeline (or to be discontinued/replaced) to meet targeted growth commitments

Job Requirements:

  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 40 pounds
  • Ability to perform repeated bending, standing and reaching
  • Capable of working in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated expertise with Word, Excel, and other MS Office Suite applications
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to research and resolve issues
  • Excellent time management skills; ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Good understanding of intra-departmental functions, operations and marketing programs
  • Strong organizational skills and detail orientated

Qualification & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, Business or other related field
